The East Window The beautiful stained glass window behind the Altar, was given by John and William Francis DICKIN, in memory of their parents, John and Ann Dickin. John Dickin, in whose memory the window was given, married Ann, daughter of Thomas Harper, by Licence on 9th March 1809 at Market Drayton. By 1818 John and Ann were Yeoman farmers at 'The Platt', John having inherited the farm from his father*. Here they lived and produced a family of 7 children, between 1810 and 1825, who were all baptised at Prees Parish Church. John died on 21st July 1850 aged 67. Mary on 5th March 1856 aged 68. Of the children, Mary born 1810 and Thomas Harpur born 1817, both died young. Sarah born 1813, married on 4th June 1841 at Prees, Thomas Harper Adams, Gent of Edgmond, Newport and Mary Ann, born 1825 married on 27th March 1845 at Prees, Thomas Hares. Elizabeth born 1818 remained single and was buried at Prees on 23rd Jan 1864. This left just the 2 sons, who after the death of their mother in March 1856 commissioned the window in memory of their parents. John was the eldest son, born in 1811 and William Francis the youngest, born 1820, neither of them married. John and William were both Baptised at Prees Parish Church and also buried in the churchyard, where gravestones remain, erected to perpetuate their memory, along with those of their brothers and sisters, Mary, Thomas Harpur, and Elizabeth. John died on 9th Dec 1866, leaving in his Will £100 to the parish of Prees, with the interest to be given to the poor of the township. William Francis died on 15th Feb 1887, so ending the long association of this family with Prees Parish Church. William was born in Acton Reynolds and was buried in Shawbury on 4th June 1781, but probably moved to live in Prees after his second marriage to Elizabeth Jebb, widow and daughter of Sam Brayne, which took place on 19th April 1769 at Prees parish church. Although William is buried in Shawbury, Elizabeth was buried on 9th August 1788 at Prees. William & Elizabeth had no children, so John was definitely the son of William and his first wife Mary. John married Elizabeth Harper of Whixall on 18th Feb 1783, by Licence at Prees and their son John was born soon after, but his baptism has not yet been found. A further child named Mary was born and died in June 1790, there were no more children. By 1790 John Dickin was recorded in the parish register at Prees, as a 'Farmer & Publican' of Prees and by 1795 he was Mr Dickin of 'The Platt'. It is recorded in the parish records of that year, "a subscription to the amount of £50 was collected for the poor, to buy corn and sell out at a reduced price. Mr Dickin of The Platt was one of 3 men active in this collection". This was during the period between 1790 & 1820 when there was a rapid increase in the number of people seeking 'parish relief' caused by the high price of bread and a rise in unemployment at the end of the French Wars. John was buried at Prees on 10th Dec 1815 and in the register he is recorded as 'Snr. Esq. Obviously a man of some standing in the community to be accorded this rank. His wife Elizabeth was buried at Prees on 7th Feb 1827. John Dickin, Jnr. carried on farming at 'The Platt' and married Ann, daughter of Thomas Harper of Woodseves at Market Drayton on 9th March 1809. John & Ann are commemorated in the beautiful East Window of Prees Parish Church. A parish in the WHITCHURCH DIVISION of the hundred of Bradford, North, a peculiar, a vicarage remaining in charge, in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, the deanery of Salop, and archdeaconry of Salop. 484 houses; 3,190 inhabitants. 4 miles north-east of Wem. Rowland Lord Hill was born at Prees in 1772. In 1844 Whitchurch (Shropshire) is a parish mostly within the hundred of Bradford, South. In 1844 PREES described as a parish in the hundred division of Bradford. The village itself comprises the townships of Prees and Steel. In 1863 PREES is a parish and railway station, comprising several townships. Whitchurch division of North Bradford hundred still. Wem Union (my interpretation is that the Union was the local social security approach in the 1800s, with a Relieving Officer in charge).

The towns of RODDINGTON, WROCKWARDINE & WELLINGTON are about 6 or 8 miles apart in SHROPSHIRE and are in the north west area of the present day town of TELFORD. PREES is about 12 miles north.

PACE families at PREES In early 1600s - there appears RICHARD, ROWLAND and GRIFFITH PACE registered as fathers in St.Chad's parish registers at Prees. The two RICHARDS may be the same person.

I've arranged the Christening entrys by birth date and father, in an attempt to realize the possible families. This may not be 100% accurate but may give some idea of descendency of generations of Pace families from Prees. It will be noticed that Gideon had entrys from Dec 1645 to Jan 1682 so there may have been two Gideons. I've included the father's name from each Christening entry, in case it's position in a family is in error as the Richard and Rowland may have been the same person, in the early 1600s.

I have been trying to see the descending PACE families of PREES, It is possible to see some likely descendency but not absolutely certain.I've highlighted some of the names to give some direction of descendency but it is not absolutely clear throughout the 1600s. Porter - Chidlow - Shingler

Judy Evans My GG Grandmother was MARTHA PORTER bap 1832 in Prees, she was the daughter of ABRAHAM and ALICE PORTER. It is possible that I am connected to the CHIDLOW and the SHINGLER family too Abraham's parents were Richard and Ann Porter Richard's Mother was MARY CHIDLOW, she married Richard Porter Snr. Abraham Porter's brother Thomas married MARTHA SHINGLER in the 1820's. Martha Porter's son was GEORGE ELLISON of Ightfield, George Ellison moved to Essington near Shareshill in the 1880's and lived the rest of his life there.
