Joseph & Margaret PACE of Wrockwardine parents of JOHN & GEORGE
It appears JOSEPH PACE of Christenings at RODINGTON WROCKWARDINE & PREES had a brother JOHN PACE by Christenings at WROCKWARDINE WELLINGTON and both likely were sons of ROWLAND PACE and JOSEPH marrying MARGARET PALMER at HIGH ERCALL, Shropshire
PACE Marriages |
The East WindowThe beautiful stained glass window behind the Altar, was given by John and William Francis DICKIN, in memory of their parents, John and Ann Dickin.
John was the eldest son, born in 1811 and William Francis the youngest, born 1820, neither of them married. John and William were both Baptised at Prees Parish Church and also buried in the churchyard, where gravestones remain, erected to perpetuate their memory, along with those of their brothers and sisters, Mary, Thomas Harpur, and Elizabeth. John died on 9th Dec 1866, leaving in his Will £100 to the parish of Prees, with the interest to be given to the poor of the township. William Francis died on 15th Feb 1887, so ending the long association of this family with Prees Parish Church.

Footnote: Other DICKIN families remained in the area until the 20th century, and their descendants remain until the present day. If anyone would like more information on this family or any of the other families mentioned please contact: Sue Page, JOHN DICKIN OF 'THE PLATT', PREESJohn married Elizabeth Harper of Whixall on 18th Feb 1783, by Licence at Prees and their son John was born soon after, but his baptism has not yet been found. A further child named Mary was born and died in June 1790, there were no more children. By 1790 John Dickin was recorded in the parish register at Prees, as a 'Farmer & Publican' of Prees and by 1795 he was Mr Dickin of 'The Platt'. It is recorded in the parish records of that year, "a subscription to the amount of £50 was collected for the poor, to buy corn and sell out at a reduced price. Mr Dickin of The Platt was one of 3 men active in this collection". This was during the period between 1790 & 1820 when there was a rapid increase in the number of people seeking 'parish relief' caused by the high price of bread and a rise in unemployment at the end of the French Wars. John was buried at Prees on 10th Dec 1815 and in the register he is recorded as 'Snr. Esq. Obviously a man of some standing in the community to be accorded this rank. His wife Elizabeth was buried at Prees on 7th Feb 1827. John Dickin, Jnr. carried on farming at 'The Platt' and married Ann, daughter of Thomas Harper of Woodseves at Market Drayton on 9th March 1809. John & Ann are commemorated in the beautiful East Window of Prees Parish Church.
Sue Page - email Sue - 01684 59200 There were many other DICKIN families in the Prees area, who are all descendants of Rowland Dickin, brother of John Dickin of Acton Reynolds and Shawbury. The last of these to live in Prees was Rowland, the Cobbler of 8 Mill Street. Who will possibly be remembered by some who still live in Prees. I have researched some of these families and I may feel inspired to write about them at a later stage. Please let me know if you would like copies of any further articles . Sue Page (nee DICKIN) Footnote: Other DICKIN families, arrived earlier and remained in the area until the 20th century, their descendants remain until the present day. ROWLAND PACE
based on the fact that Josuah may have been Joseph and the appearance of the name Margaret which also appears in many PACE families generations later. From Gregory's Gazeeteer of Shropshire 1824: (page 425 on 5) PREES. A parish in the WHITCHURCH DIVISION of the hundred of Bradford, North, a peculiar, a vicarage remaining in charge, in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, the deanery of Salop, and archdeaconry of Salop. 484 houses; 3,190 inhabitants. 4 miles north-east of Wem. Rowland Lord Hill was born at Prees in 1772. In 1844 Whitchurch (Shropshire) is a parish mostly within the hundred of Bradford, South. In 1844 PREES described as a parish in the hundred division of Bradford. The village itself comprises the townships of Prees and Steel. In 1863 PREES is a parish and railway station, comprising several townships. Whitchurch division of North Bradford hundred still. Wem Union (my interpretation is that the Union was the local social security approach in the 1800s, with a Relieving Officer in charge). |

Possibly a migration from HIGH ERCALL to PREES Shropshire after the 1589 marriage of THOMAS PACE to JANE ARNEWEY. There were Paces at High Ercall and other surnames connected to Pace. These surnames help determine the Pace history. PALMER, BROOKES, HARRISON, GROOM and many others.

John Pace of Middlesex He may fit with Shropshire Pace Christenings of mid 1600s, considering the given names of his children are even similar to contemporary Shropshire Pace families. Ruth Keyes Clark, has proven John Pace of Middlesex would have been born between 1657 and 1672.
John PACE |
The towns of RODDINGTON, WROCKWARDINE & WELLINGTON are about 6 or 8 miles apart in SHROPSHIRE and are in the north west area of the present day town of TELFORD. PREES is about 12 miles north. The two RICHARDS may be the same person.
Both JOHNS Christened in early 1650's, one JOHN fits JOHN & ANN in Christening JOHN PACE 24 Feb 1675-76 at HODNET Shropshire while the other JOHN fits parents JOHN & JONE of Christening JOHN PACE 25 Jan 1675 at WELLINGTON Shropshire. Take your pick - I think they both fit.
see - HODNET page
The problem remains, their father JOHN could not be the same JOHN PACE and the JOHN PACE Chr. 1637 would be too young (abt 13) to be their father - to my thinking - so more wonderment and speculation is appropriate.
It's ABSOLUTELY neccessary to collect ALL PACE Christening entrys in surrounding Shropshire parishes to make an suitable ASSUMPTION about parentage of these two JOHNS Chr at 20 Oct 1650 and 3 Oct 1651 at Prees, both with father JOHN PACE
If you have a theory on this assumption, please offer your ideas..
+ MARY BARNET
JOHN Chr.1637 not likely either HODNET or WELLINGTON JOHN PACE mentioned in left hand column. This JOHN PACE seems to have left the PREES scene.

There are two JOHN PACES below in blue - Christened early 1650's - I've put them here which is not likely correct. The important thing is - there were two fitting destinations for both JOHNS in the time frame, 1670's, being Christened early 1650's - then old enough to have married and be father of the two mid 1670's Christenings I've specified, even though no marriage seems to exist for either JOHN.

ABOVE CHRISTENING situation/assumption would fit the two JOHN PACES Christened in 1650/51, who would likely marry, early 20's and first Christening would be when the father was around 25 years of age.
