      WEBMASTER NOTE - GTPace

      - The OLDBURY name of QUATFORD, Shropshire later shows up in a LOWBRIDGE marriage at LUDLOW in 1711 between ELIZABETH OLDBURY b 1686 Quatford and SAMUEL LOWBRIDGE - b 1689 HARTLEBURY, Worcestershire.

They are ancestors of an AGNES LOWBRIDGE who married LEONARD PACE in 1889. LEONARD - b 1864 being the grandson of THOMAS PACE bapt 26 May 1805 SHARESHILL brother of JOSHUA PACE my 2X great grandfather, Chr 10 July 1808 Laney Green/SHARESHILL, Staffordshire - GTPace

      This lineage starts with
RICHARD CULLWICK son of Thomas of Bridgnorth, and descends from him.
He was a saddler at NEWPORT Shropshire and wed approx 1670/75 at NEWPORT.

His parents have been proved to be
THOMAS and ANN CULLWICK of BRIDGENORTH.

THOMAS CULLWICK - a tailor
was admitted a Burgess of Bridgnorth 20 Oct 1647 and buried at St Mary's, Bridgnorth 23 Aug 1661

CULLWICKS were in the BRIDGNORTH area by the 16th century (Quatt) and moved from there to SHIFNAL and NEWPORT, then to KNIGHTON in RADNORSHIRE and finally (in 1840) to WOLVERHAMPTON.

They were saddlers until well into this century, and Methodists from the earliest days of organised Methodism (about 1800).

Hill House Farm

Hill House, Quatford
Shropshire

THOMAS, JOHN (yeoman, HILL HOUSE, Quatford) and ELINOR were brothers and sister - all children of RICHARD CULLWICK of GLAZELEY and probable grandchildren of STEPHEN and ELINOR of CLAVERLEY.

It appears that ELENOR lived at HILL HOUSE, Quatford, with brother JOHN, as she married from that address on 18 Nov 1632. She married John OULDBURIE (OLDBURY) also of QUATFORD.

JOHN CULLWICK married at Quatford 24 June 1634 and had a son JOHN in 1639 and died following an accident at Hill House 1647. His will is at the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth and probate was granted in 1653 to his 14 year old son, JOHN CULLWICK
THOMAS married ANNE and there are three entries on the Bridgnorth registers. Firstly, a son RICHARD born 20 March, baptised 26 March 1649; secondly, the burial of ANNE, wife of THOMAS CULWICKE, recorded 20 May 1659; Thirdly, the burial of THOMAS CULWICKE 23 August 1661.

Thus, THOMAS and ANNE seem to have left an only child, RICHARD, an orphan at the age of 12. The strong inference is that RICHARD was apprenticed to a saddler, at this point. In the Burgess of Bridgnorth records, RICHARD was admitted 26 September 1670 as a "Burgess born, son of Thomas C of Bridgnorth, deceased, tailor" No mention is made of Richard's trade in Newport, but, because three of his sons became master saddlers, it seems likely he was also a saddler.

A letter from the present owners of HILL HOUSE

We moved to Hill House in December, 1974, but recently de-camped to the barn next door. However, we still own the house and - as both of us love it dearly - we have hopes of sympathetically renovating it at some time.

We tried, many years ago, to find out its history, but with little success. But, I think, we now have a good starting point and will have another go.

The original house is still intact, not very obvious from the outside, I know! But, if you are ever visiting the area or would like to come here anyway, you would be more than welcome to visit your ancestral seat. Nicola Ward.
