PACE OF CORBRIDGE,  NORTHUMBERLAND, UK
15 mi. west of Newcastle upon Tyne
Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998
from: Gilbert Raymond gilr@xtra.co.nz

I have Pace's in my ancestry,   fairly early in the piece.

MARY PACE b. circa 1665, daughter of ROBERT PACE of AYDON CASTLE, CORBRIDGE, NORTHUMBERLAND, UK married JOHN SHARP of CORBRIDGE on 9 February 1691 at Corbridge.

Mary is a direct ancestor.     I have information about others of the Pace surname of Corbridge, but how precisely they relate to one another,  I am not sure.

Does this fall within your area of interest?
I am looking foreward to hearing from you.

Gil Raymond - New Zealand

NOTE....I'd like to mention, a ROBERT PACE who married ELEANOR LYDIA SPRAGGON (born 14 Feb 1814, Jarrow Co. Durham) at Sunderland on 8 August 1831, is being researched. I am afraid that is all the information that I have about this particular Robert. He does not appear to match any of my lot in Northumberland. If any of your correspondents are researching this couple, I would be happy to pass on the address of this person.

EARLIEST
PACE ANCESTOR

My earliest proven Pace ancestor was Gawin PACE, 'lanius de Mearsford'(lanius being butcher). He was of the PACE family of Aydon Castle and Corbridge, in Northumberland, England. But before him in 1317 John 'PAGE' in a gang of bandits at Aydon Castle with the company of Gilbert de Middleton seized the castle. In 1336 Robertus PAGE of Thornbrough, a hamlet near Corbridge, was listed on the Subsidy Roll at 5 shillings.

Gawin PACE was buried in Ponteland in June 1609. He had two known children:

  • Isabella who married Jeffrey Aitchison at Ponteland in November 1614
  • and Thomas PACE who married Jane Aitchison (Jeffrey's sister?) - a month later at Ponteland in December 1614.

Thomas who was born circa 1590 had several children: Simon who died in 1699; John baptised 1616; Gawin bapt. 1620; Mary and Susanna bapt. 15 September 1621, and Robert PACE of Aydon Castle born circa 1633. Robert paid hearth tax in 1664 at Aydon. He married a Barbary - - - - - of New Riding. Robert PACE had 6 known children:John of Great Whittington; Richard bapt. 1658; Edward bapt. 1663 who married Elizabeth Moffitt in 1689; Elizabeth bapt. 1667, Lyonell bapt. 1672 who married Frances Shield in 1704; and Mary PACE, my direct ancestor, born circa 1660, who married John SHARP of Great Whittington in 1691.

An historical note: On Sept 1703, Robert Troutbeck, Vicar, called on Catherine Bell, Margaret Urwin, Isabel Todd, Margaret Wilson and "Mary Sharp' when Richard Gibson tried to serve a warrant for debt on William Todd. They 'fell on him, some by the hand, others by his legges, cloaths and other parts of his body, took him and dragged him and some of them by his cravat had so far strangled him that he was left speechless and almost dead'.

I don't know what lesson we can learn from that little episode except, perhaps, always to wear a clip-on bow tie when serving warrants.

These Paces may sound a little rough, but remember that while Southern England lived in relative peace and waxed fat, the Borderers lived on a battlefield, a waste land, for almost 300 years, from the late 13th century to the middle of the 16th. If they grew up hard they ample cause. These were the people from whom sprang the reivers, the riding families. And the reivers gave the English language the words, bereaved and bereft and blackmail, which had a different meaning from the one it has today -- it was more like a protection racket. And they instituted the 'deadly feid' - deadly feud - long before the Hatfields and McCoys were ever heard of.

I hope you didn't mind the little bit of history from my mother's county, Northumberland, and the turbulent PACEs who are among my early ancestors.

   PACES in AUSTRALIA
Date: 98-03-30    From:  alan.pace@mailcity.com

I am ALAN REGINALD PACE, living in MELBOURNE, Australia.
In 1997, there was a PACE family reunion at DONALD, a wheat town in the STATE of VICTORIA, Australia. A grain milling element is evident historically.

Our origins seem to go back to MILLFIELD, NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND
.....More specifically, the village, or property of ROSEN, nearby. Within a mile or so there is PACE HILL which overlooks FLODDEN FIELD....the site of perhaps the last battle between the English and the Scots. {I expect that my folk either took part, or more likely, stood on Pace Hill & watched - but don't take that too seriously, It's a bit of Aussie irony!}

NOTE....My HISTORY of ENGLAND text book mentions the King of SCOTLAND died at FLODDEN, in this battle - FLODDEN & MILLFIELD are in northern England, about 25/30 miles SE of EDINBOROUGH, Scotland - GTPace

Regarding the Aussie PACE history
ROBERT PACE, 'farmer' died in NORTHUMBERLAND, UK but his 2nd wife JANE YOUNG b 1819, d 1919 left for OZ on the "Tornado" in 1858 - buried in BACCHUS MARSH, VIC. [a rich 'market' or 'truck farming' valley 30 miles west of MELBOURNE] - OZ - Australia, for Australians

I lived in Louisville, KY for a year and had no idea that so many Paces lived in nearby states.

Stephen Henty married Jane Pace in Fremantle April 1836; four sons and six daughters were the issue of the marriage. Mrs. Stephen Henty, who was born in Yorkshire April 14, 1812, died in Hamilton February 2, 1906. She was the first white woman to settle permanently in Western Victoria, arriving in Portland, December 18, 1836. From a small booklet "Old Memories, " written by this grand old lady on her 84th birthday, some interesting items can be gleaned.
