Purpose of this page

The GROOM families in ENGLAND
were also in the same SHROPSHIRE parishes as PACES - click here

I'm looking for the earliest GROOM/GROOMS of this family in Virginia, later Kentucky, where two Grooms married two PACE members. The PACE-DNA study puts me related to JOHN PACE of Middlesex County Virginia whose first documented record in Virginia is in 1693, a purchase of land in Middlesex County.

Let me say - since I was born in ENGLAND myself, a connection of my ancestry to JOHN PACE of Middlesex Co. would have been to a common ancestor, before JOHN or his ancestor, left England.

The common ancestor appears to be JOSEPH PACE Christened at Prees, Shropshire in 1618, father Rowland Pace. A 1653 marriage to Margaret PALMER for a JOSEPH/JOSHUA appears in the High Ercall, Shropshire registers. Then a Christening in 1665 at nearby Wrockwardine, Shropshire of the JOHN PACE, father JOSEPH mother MARGARET. My 6X great grandfather GEORGE PACE was Christened at Prees in 1670, father JOSEPH PACE, mother not mentioned but George's first child in 1694 was named MARGARET.

The JOHN PACE who showed up in Virginia, had six children, five of the given names were the same names my GEORGE PACE named his children in Staffordshire.

These name similarities, the DNA matches with today's descendents of the JOHN PACE of 1693 Virginia, indicate a rather clear PACE family connection.

Now I propose that JOHN PACE did not travel alone from Shropshire to Virginia. This web page indicates that GROOM families also lived in Virginia parishes where the JOHN PACE family and later descendents lived.

In looking for that common ancestor, the GROOM family may have some interesting clues. GROOM families were also in SHROPSHIRE parishes where my PACE ancestors were - the era of JOHN of M's ancestry also.

So I am collecting pertinent facts & info.
Maybe you have something that would be useful here too.

I've done my PACE research in ENGLAND back to the days of HENRY VIII. At the probable time of JOHN of M's birth say the 1650's, my PACE ancestors were in the same SHROPSHIRE parishes as GROOM.

This makes for an interesting study.
I'm putting some facts together here.

Maybe the original GROOM ancestor who emmigrated from England to colonial America, can be found, then his descendency in America that connects with the PACE family, later.

Some of my info comes from the GROOM-L@rootsweb.com list archives.
I've also collected GROOM Christenings & marriages of SHROPSHIRE parishes where PACE records were also to be found in the 1500's 1600's 1700's - the parishes of WELLINGTON, HIGH ERCALL, PREES, CLIVE -

Subject: Robert Groom, Richard Groom, William Groom

There were TWO families of Grooms
who intermingled in the area of Louisa, Orange, and Goochland.
JOHN of ORANGE Co had siblings so-named - ROBERT, RICHARD and WILLIAM Groom.

WILLIAM and DOROTHY Maddison Groom also had sons with the names Robert, Richard, and William. Furthermore, I believe that Dorothy and William's sons remained in the area a few years and also named their sons some of the same names.

Since legal documents don't require an age or parentage, we will have to find other ways to discern to which family they belonged. The test of which is which is in part knowing when your Robert, Richard, or William migrated and where.

When did JOHN of ORANGE's sibling migrate? How early do you find WILLIAM in KY, ROBERT in his location, and RICHARD his?

WILLIAM and DOROTHY Maddison Groom's

  1. HENRY MADISON GROOM remained in Louisa until about 1800.
  2. Their son WILLIAM who married
+ NANCY PARRISH died in Louisa in 1793.

I believe it was their son, Robert, who married Frances Parrish, daughter of Jolly Parrish, and two years later Elizabeth Bibb.

Jolly Parrish had lived in Goochland as did the WM Grooms. Richard is a question mark. I always believed both Richard and Robert migrated. However there were real estate purchases and sales in the 1790's and sales in the 1818-20 period in Louisa. The 1818-20 sales could be another generation or the same. Additionally, there is another William Groom taxpayer in the Louisa area in 1800. This is after the death of my William in 1793 and before his son, William, was beyond childhood and probably after the death of the elder William.

Can you help on migration dates? And is the wife you see in the new location identified?

Idonna

Cynthia Ann Groom b 02 October 1804 in Clark Co. Kentucky. She had a brother named Spencer who died at age 12. Spencer is the only sibling mentioned in family lore.

I don't know if any of this is connected but the Parrish, Groom, Spencer families were related early in Goochland, VA. and Winchester, Ky. Frances Parrish married Robert Groom and her brother Jolly S. Parrish married Roxie Ann Spencer. Jolly S. and Roxie Ann Spencer Parrish married 1802 and moved 1835 to Pettis Co Mo. I would look into this if you haven't already. I do have the Parrish, Fox, and connecting families of Winchester, Clark Co Ky. in a "Fox Cousins by the Dozens" book.
