The confusion on the number of wives that James Pace had comes because of an 19th century LDS practice (although not the practice today) of trying to insure that all family members were sealed (married) to someone. How this relates to James Pace, is that a number of his deceased relatives were sealed to him, but these women were never his wives in this life. James Pace along with other family members participated in these sealings of these related women to James Pace. Because these women were deceased, some one needed to stand in for them at the sealing ceremony, and these people are called proxies.

Below is the list of the women I know who were sealed to James Pace, but were not his wives. Some of these records I have seen myself, but others I have not. The complete list below I received from Paul R. Petersen who is now deceased.

    • Louisa Caroline Strickland [deceased], sealed to James Pace on 9 Feb 1877.
Serving as proxy for Louisa Caroline Strickland was her sister, Lucinda Gibson Strickland, wife of James Pace.

    • Nancy Ballard, sealed to James Pace, 9 March 1877.
Proxy for Nancy Ballard was Martha Amelia Pearce McCullough, granddaughter of James Pace and Lucinda Gibson Strickland. [I believe this Nancy Ballard MAY be James Pace's niece, daughter of his sister Ruth Pace who married Lewis Ballard. Nancy Ballard died before Feb. 1873 in Illinois. She was not the wife of James Pace.]

    • Maria Yearly, sealed to James Pace, 15 March 1877.
Proxy for Maria Yearly was Margaret Leonora Pace, daughter of James Pace.

    • Nancy Loving, sealed to James Pace, 10 May 1877.
Proxy for Nancy Loving was Margaret Leonora Pace who in another record stated that she was a 2nd cousin. Nancy Loving was born in Rutherford Co., TN and was a relative of James Pace through his mother Mary Ann Loving.

    • Jane Merriday, sealed to James Pace, 15 June 1877.
Proxy for Jane Merriday was Margaret Leonora Pace who indicated she was a 2nd cousin in another record. [Jane Merriday was also related to James Pace (a cousin) through his mother Mary Ann Loving's sister Judy Loving who married James Merriday.]

    • Eliza Black, sealed to James Pace, 27 July 1877.
Proxy for Eliza Black was Lucinda Gibson Strickland Pace. [Eliza Black is a relative of Lucinda Gibson Strickland Pace.]

    • Keziah Brown, sealed to James Pace, 13 June 1877.
Proxy for Keziah Brown was Margaret Leonora Pace, her cousin.

    • Melinda Pace, sealed to James Pace, 9 May 1877.
Proxy for Melinda Pace was Margaret Leonora Pace, her second cousin. Melinda Pace was born in Rutherford co., TN. [I *THINK* that Melinda Pace may be James' cousin, "Linny" Pace, daughter of John and Sarah (Anderson) Pace, that is listed in the Rutherford Co., TN County Court Minutes in July 1815.]

    • Polly Pace, sealed to James Pace, 21 June 1877.
Proxy for Polly Pace was James' wife Ann Webb Pace. James' daughter Ruth Eugenia Pace, indicated that Polly Pace was her 2nd cousin in another record. [This would also be one of James Pace's cousins, although I am not sure who her father was. John and Sarah (Anderson) Pace had a daughter Polly who was also named in the July 1815 Rutherford Co., TN County Court Minutes. But with the more common name of Polly (Mary), it is also possible that she was a daughter of another one of James Pace's uncles, the sons of William Pace and Ruth Lambert.]

Since all of these women were already dead when they were sealed to James Pace - there were no additional children.
