Recent mention of Cornelius PACE (abt 1827 - aft 1910) and his father, Cornelius PACE (abt 1787 - Oct 1847) has prompted me to again call for any additional information that may be known about the father. It is thought that he is the son of Burrell PACE (abt 1758 - abt 1816) and Lydia Woodruff PACE (25 Aug 1760 - abt 1810). Based on what I know, the relationship is tenuous, at best. If anyone has any further direct or collateral evidence I would dearly love to have knowledge of it. Not being a professional genealogist I would like to ask if the above is enough to state that Cornelius, the elder, was a son of Burrell PACE.
- 1. Several census entries for himself and his children list his birth state as South Carolina. Burrell & Lydia were residing in that state from 1785 to 1804.
- 2. Cornelius, the elder, is listed in the 1810 Rutherford County, 1820 Buncombe County, 1830 Buncombe County and 1840 Henderson County, North Carolina Federal Census records along with Burrell and sons Jonathan, Moses, Richmond and daughter Phebe. All of these people are not in each census due to the death of Burrell and the ages of Richmond and Phebe. In most cases the ones listed are all in a group one after the other. In 1820 he is missing from any index of that census. You have to look at the detail to find him (Buncombe County, Page 90, Line 3).
- 3. In a deed between Burrell and Jonathan dated 19 Dec 1805 in Rutherford County, NC "Cornilius Pace" is a witness.
- 4. He named his first son, Burrell.
- 5. Noble Pace, in his book, lists Cornelius as a son of this family with no supporting evidence.
- 6. Bruce Howard, in his book, lists Cornelius as a son of this family with the above witness to the 19 Dec 1805 deed listed as collateral evidence.
ABOUT Cornelius PACE (abt 1827 - abt 1912)
Cornelius PACE was born about 1827 in Buncombe County, NC. His enlistment record in Company G, 56th NC Regiment is dated 20 Apr 1863 and lists his age as 36. He served in the military from 20 Apr 1863 in the Army of Northern Virginia, 56th Regiment, Company G, Henderson Blues. He was wounded in the ankle during the many battles around Petersburg, VA in 1864 and was crippled for the remainder of his life. He enlisted in Henderson County, NC and claimed residence in that county. He appears in various census records in MS and then GA. There are records of several Federal Land Grants to him around Huntsville, AL in 1857, 1858 and 1860. He resided most of his life in Pickens County,GA. He died about 1912 in Pickens County, GA. It is said that he continued to pick up his pension checks until sometime in 1912. He was buried in Long Swamp Baptist Church, Pickens County, GA along with the family of his daughter, Charlotte E. "Lotti" PACE WIGGINGTON with whom he lived during his last years.
The descendents of Cornelius are known from court actions taken in the disposition of his property after his death. This covered a period of over 20 years from 1870 to the early 1890's. If you attended the Pace Society Reunion this year and took the bus trip to Saluda, NC (formerly Pace's Gap) you were on the property "known as the Old Cornelius Pace farm". Most, if not all, of downtown Saluda was included in his property. The coming of the railroad in the early 1870's prompted his children to go to court to claim their part of his property.
