JOHN PACE
moved to Old EDGECOMBE County, NC
with his brother RICHARD, about 1760. Upon RICHARD's death, he sold the farm and moved to SURRY County N.C. JOHN and two sons THOMAS and RICHMOND were TORIES during the REVOLUTIONARY War. They were all killed in action although the exact date and location are unknown. JOHN, believed to have died at the battle of SHALLOW FORD with two sons, Oct 8 1780 - not been proven although it's known he served under command of GIDEON WRIGHT whose unit was involved in the battle.

BURWELL enlisted in the PATRIOT Army in the year 1776. He was elected to the rank of Sargeant in Col. John HENTON's regiment. After the war, BURREL petitioned the North Carolina State Legislature on June 28 1781 to return some of the land confiscated from his father and brother in 1780. The legislature refused his request.

believed to have died at
the battle of SHALLOW FORD,
Surry Co., North Carolina abt 1780

the Pace family of that area were killed--father John Pace (wife Sarah Burge) of Surry Co. NC and probably his sons Thomas and Richmond Pace. The area of Shallow Ford NC is now in Yadkin Co. NC, no longer in Surry Co.

Citation from:
"One Heroic Hour at King's Mountain" - Pat Alderman, 2nd ed, The Overmountain Press, Johnson City, TN, 1968, 1990 ISBN 0-932807-40-2.

p.68 - "Partisan conflicts, between the Tories and Whigs, were continuing in many southern sections. We cite one such incident that took place on the Yadkin River eight days after the King's Mountain victory. A company of 300 Surry [NC] County Tories had been recruited to join the Loyalist cause. They had enlisted under Colonel Gideon Wright and his brother Captain Hezikiah Wright. They probably had not learned of the King's Mountain Battle, as they were marching to join General Cornwallis at Charlotte. They plundered, killed and burned on their march toward the British force. Colonel Joseph Williams, living near Shallow Ford on the Yadkin, called together some 200 rifleman from the area. They set up an ambush at the ford and awaited the Tory party. The 300 Loyalists prepared to cross the river, not suspecting any opposition. The conflict was short, hard and decisive. The Tories, badly beaten, fled and scattered."

    Major (x) WALKER; (w) M. Handy.

The witness appears to be M. HANDY, and that would make Major Walker the bondsman for the marriage of
    STEPHEN PACE and LUCY WALKER

widow of a brother of STEPHEN's first wife, NANCY WALKER. The date of the marriage is listed as 8 March 1799.

It is my understanding that the bondsman is attesting to the fact that these people could legally marry and pledging his own money to that end.

If I were to make a guess I would guess that the PACE and WALKER families had been closely interlinked for many years, but not necessarily a blood relationship

It is known that GIDEON WILLIAM PACE was the only Pace in LAWRENCE Co AL in 1850, which is where RICHMOND PACE was in 1840. On the 1840 census RICHMOND had 1 son age 15-19 which fits GIDEON's birth year.

This RICHMOND was b 1800 SC, possibly died 3/6/1880 in MS, and was a son of BURRELL P. PACE Sr. and LYDIA WOODRUFF from NC. The evidence seems to indicate that RICHMOND's 1st wife was a SUSAN, but surname unknown. They married abt. 1822. His second wife was ELIZABETH JEFFREYS m 1841 AL. There is a marriage record in CLARKE Co AL showing a RICHARD PACE m. SUSAN JARVIS on 11/27/1823.

I believe this RICHARD was b 1793 SC and was a son of GEORGE PACE and ANN PILL. Another RICHARD PACE b abt. 1790 SC is supposed to have married a SUSANNAH JARVIS in AL. He was a son of WILLIAM PACE and DRUCILLA GRISSOM. SUSAN JARVIS was supposedly born in 1805 and SUSANNAH JARVIS was supposedly born in 1798.

    CIVIL WAR PACES
    By Jon Pace

    North Carolina

Most of the PACE men listed in the 54th and 64th Regiments were Henderson/Buncombe/Polk/Rutherford County grandsons (or great grandsons of Burrell & Lydia PACE). As with all other families in the South, it was a very hard war on the descendents of Burrell & Lydia PACE. Here are some details on the ones I can identify.
    Jonathan A. Pace

    #2 CORNELIUS PACE: (abt 1827 - abt 1912)
    He married CLARISSA before 1848
son of CORNELIUS PACE and SARAH
    grandson of BURRELL PACE.
He was from ALABAMA before the war but returned to NC to serve. After the war he sold his portion of his Father's estate to his brother DAVID and went to North GA. He resided in PICKENS County GA until his death.

    #4 & #5: DANIEL PACE. Was probably
    DANIEL PACE (19 Dec 1833 - 25 Feb 1912).
He married Sarah E. He was a son of MOSES & MARGARET PACE; grandson of BURRELL PACE. The other MAY be his uncle, Daniel Kimsey PACE (6 Oct 1791 - 31 May 1871). However, he was probably too old to have served. I have no record of another NC Daniel PACE.

    #10 GOVAN PACE (abt 1840 - 29 March 1863)
This a son of BURRELL & CAROLINE HIPPS PACE; grandson of Cornelius PACE; great grandson of Burrell & Lydia PACE. His CW Service Record reads: Govan Pace; Residence: Polk County, North Carolina Occupation: Farmer. Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 22 April 1862 in Polk Co., NC at the age of 22. Enlisted in Company I, 54th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 16 May 1862. Died of disease on 29 March 1863 in Staunton, VA. Source: North Carolina Troops 1861-65, A Roster. (NCRosterC) Published in 1993.

    #15 & #16: One if these is
JAMES W. PACE (abt Jan 1832 - abt Dec 1910)
He married LOUIS "Nellie" PHILLIPS. This the eldest brother of GOVAN PACE; a son of BURRELL & CAROLINE HIPPS PACE; grandson of CORNELIUS PACE; great grandson of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE.

#19, #21 & #23: One of these is John Pace (abt 1830 - 6 Feb 1865). He married MARY PAINTER. I do not have a middle name of initial for him. He was a son of CORNELIUS & SARAH PACE; grandson of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE. He died in the Camp Douglas POW camp in ILLINOIS and is buried in the Confederate Mound. In the settlement of his Father's estate in Sep 1870 his is mentioned as

"...John Pace, deceased...one of the heirs of Cornelius Pace decease..."

His children David, Henry, Matilda and Scott received 1/12 of the value of their grandfather's estate.

    Another possibility is
    JOHN C. PACE (abt 1830 - bef Mar 1870)
He married MATILDA abt 1857. He was son of JONATHON & SUSANNA PACE; grandson of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE. However, it appears there were two (2) men named JOHN C. PACE during this time. In the estate records for Jonathan PACE filed in Mar 1870. The son is mentioned as "...John C. Pace, deceased..." AND John C. PACE is named as one of the executors of the estate.

#20: This is PROBABLY John Benjamin Franklin PACE (9 Jan 1838 - 10 Mar 1918). He was a son of Daniel & Sarah PACE; grandson of Burrell & Lydia PACE. His CW Service Record reads: John Benjamin F. Pace; 09 January 1838 Born on 09 January 1838. Residence: Henderson County, North Carolina Occupation: Farmer. Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 05 October 1861 in Henderson County, NC at the age of 23. Enlisted in Company G, 35th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 05 November 1861. Promoted to Full Corporal on 15 March 1862 (Estimated day of Promo). POW on 17 June 1864 at Near Petersburg, VA. Confined on 18 June 1864 at Point Lookout, MD (Estimated day). Transferred on 27 July 1864 at Elmira, NY. Took Oath of Allegiance on 12 June 1865 at Elmira, NY. Source: North Carolina Troops 1861-65, A Roster. (NCRosterC) Published in 1993

#24: JORDAN A. PACE (abt 1838 - 17 Jan 1863). This is another older brother of GOVAN PACE; a son of Burrell & Caroline Hipps PACE; grandson of Cornelius PACE; great grandson of Burrell & Lydia PACE. His CW Service Record reads: Jordan A Pace; Residence: Polk County, North Carolina Occupation: Farmer. Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 29 April 1862 in Polk Co., NC at the age of 22. Enlisted in Company I, 54th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 16 May 1862. Hospitalized on 04 December 1862 at Richmond, VA. Died of disease on 17 January 1863 in Richmond, VA. #26: There were several LEANDER PACE's but a couple would be of age to serve: This is probably LEANDER PACE (abt 1834 - abt 1863). This is another older brother of GOVAN PACE; a son of BURRELL & CAROLINE HIPPS PACE; grandson of CORNELIUS PACE; great grandson of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE. I have no source for the date of his death.

    Another possibility is
LEANDER PACE (abt 1843 - ???). He was a son of WILLIS & SARAH PACE; grandson of JONATHON & SUSANNA PACE; great grandson of Burrell & Lydia PACE.

    A remote possibility is
    LEANDER JACKSON PACE (3 Aug 1816 - 2 Feb 1893).
He married Luvenia MORRIS. Son of MOSES & MARGARET PACE; grandson of BURRELL PACE. This LEANDER served in the militia during the Cherokee Indian Removal. In later years he was Captain of the local Militia and a local civic leader in Hendersonville. I believe the other Leander's are named in his honour.

#30: SILAS PACE (abt 1830 - ???). He married ELMIRA.
He was son of JONATHON & SUSANNA PACE; grandson of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE. His CW Service Record reads: Silas Pace: Residence: Henderson County, North Carolina Occupation: (none listed). #32: The is PROBABLY
THOMAS FRANKLIN PACE (2 Sep 1842 - 29 Jan 1909). He was a son of MOSES & MARGARET PACE; grandson of BURRELL PACE.

    #33 - #44:
Of the W. PACE and WILLIAM PACE men there are several possibilities.

WILLIAM PACE (abt 1847 - ???). This is younger brother of GOVAN PACE; a son of BURRELL & CAROLINE HIPPS PACE; grandson of CORNELIUS PACE; great grandson of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE.

    WILLIAM HANNON PACE (31 Jul 1826 - 7 Sep 1904)
He married CECILIA M. STATON. He was a son of MOSES & MARGARET PACE; grandson of BURRELL PACE.

    WILLIAM M. PACE (abt 1820 - ???).

In addition to these NC men are descendents of BURRELL & LYDIA PACE who served from other states.

    ALABAMA:

BURRELL V. PACE (??? - 28 Jan 1865). He married HANNAH HARDIN. He was son of Jonathan & Susanna PACE; grandson of Burrell & Lydia PACE. This is the ancestor of Jeanne Park. He died in the Camp Douglas POW camp in Illinois and is buried in the Confederate Mound.

    And to end the epistle.
The eldest son of my great, great grandfather (son of Cornelius & grandson of Burrell) was another Leander PACE (5 Feb 1846 - 3 Dec 1931). Family oral history says that he bragged that he was a deserter from the Confederate Army. I have found no existing records but he was said to have been called into the State Militia during Sherman's siege of Atlanta and March to the Sea.

I am hoping that the names of NEEDHAM AND YOUNG PACE will ring a bell with one of their descendants who can give us information on the family ties to this group of Paces, orphaned or deserted by their father back in the late 1830's in Guilford County.
