Emmitt Aldridge asked about James Paice aka Pace of the Cherokee Nation, probably in Georgia.Gordon W. Pace wrote on PACE-L@rootsweb.com 16 Jul 2002
This is his response.James Paice, aka Pace,
was in fact on the Cherokee Emigration Rolls of 1818.My record shows he was at Wills Creek (GA?), but I suppose it could have been Mill Creek as you said. This was a roll of Cherokees who signed up to emigrate to the Cherokee Nation West in Oklahoma and western Arkansas. He was reportedly not on the final edition of the rolls, which suggests that he did not make the journey. This may be wrong. Or he may have made the journey later.
Noted researcher, Palmer Pace, believes he was a son of Dredzil Pace, which I agree with. Dredzil Pace was b. 1734 in NC and died 1777 in Georgia. He married a Native American (unknown name) in 1751. According to the book, History of the Pace Family by Turner, Dredzil had no children, but this is doubtful per the following. According to the famous Barnabas Pace Letter: following trading with the Cherokee Indians, [Dredzil] took to himself an Indian wife, had two sons by her, and died in the prime of life. One of his sons I can remember. Father and old Uncle Barnabas raised him, but he was an Indian, and never seemed satisfied, and finally went to the nation and moved off to the White River, with the first that went off.
The reference to the nation undoubtedly means the Cherokee Nation West and the White River is probably the White River in Benton County Arkansas where my Pace ancestors settled.
Dredzil Pace was a son of Richard Pace (b. 1700) and Elizabeth Cain and this line goes back to Richard Pace of Jamestown, ca 1620. I would like to know what the evidence is that this James Pace had four or five children. Was it in the record of the Emigration Rolls? Any details from that record would be very helpful. I can give you the detailed ancestry of Dredzil Pace if you would like.
