John PACE & Battle of the Shallow Ford

As a descendant of JOHN PACE and SARAH BURGE I am always interested in any information pertaining to them. I am also very diligent now to record my sources. I wish I had been as diligent from the start. I am quite sure I have seen JOHN PACE listed somewhere as being under GIDEON WRIGHT's command. It was likely in Bruce's book but it seems to me I found it on the Internet as well. I realize that this fact alone does not mean he died at SHALLOW FORD.

I also have information in my file that JOHN and two of his sons were likely killed at SHALLOW FORD in 1780. I will do some research and see what else I can add to the discussion.

JOHN is the ancestor of the most of the MISSISSIPPI PACES which is my primary area of interest. I would also like to try and resolve the correct line for JOHN back to RICHARD. I have seen several and have personally chosen to use the one in Bruce's book, "Our Colonial Ancestors".

As far as loyalties during the American Revolution, the father of Burrell, John PACE, and his brother, Richmond, were known Tories who may have died in the Battle of SHALLOWFORD in YADKIN County, NC in Oct, 1780. They WERE killed in some action during this time period and locale. Burrell is said to have been a Patriot. Bruce Howard believes that he served a tour with a North Carolina Patriot unit. This is probably concluded based on his receiving a land grant for property in Surry County, NC about Oct, 1779. It is a recorded fact that Burrell petitioned the State of NC on 20 Jun 1781 for the return of a portion of his father's confiscated property but the petition was denied. However, a portion of the property was returned to the widow, Sarah PACE, at a later date. As to the name of Burwell/Burrell. In every case where I have seen his name where it was provided by himself or someone in the family (i.e., census, signature, etc) it is always Burrell, Burrill or sometimes Burril.
