There was a rather active discussion on this list re: the fate of the "Lost Colony" settlers:
1. An editorial was posted as "proof'of the fate of the "Lost Colony" settlers." By definition, editorials are the opinion of the writer. The editorialist is free to state, and to believe, whatever conclusion he or she wishes to state. An opinion does not constitute proof.
2. Another post stated that survivors of the "Lost Colony" integrated with the Indian tribe called "Croatoan," now known officially as "Lumbee." The official website of the Lumbee tribe can be found at http://www.lumbee-tribe.org/ and other information can be found at www.charweb.org/neighbors/na/lumbee.htm Please note their history as "migrating from the area near Danville, Virginia," some distance from Roanoke Island.
3. Another post stated that "surnames of __percent of the Lost Colony settlers can be found among descendants of Indian tribes today." That is understandable.
The "Lost Colony" settlers were English, and their surnames are not uncommon. Annette Elam Wetzel
Here is the list of the settlers (plus two) who came to Roanoke Island in 1587, from "The Lost Colony in Fact & Legend," by F. Roy Johnson, c. 1983, Johnson Publishing Co., Murfreesboro, NC 27855. ISBN 0-930230-46-9
